Phoenix United Mine, Caradon, Cornwall
The old Clanacombe and Stowes mines were reopened as Phoenix United in 1836.Substantial resources of copper ore were found, with rich tin lode alongside.
Mining records show that over 650,000 tons of copper ore was mined within the Caradon district in little less than 30 years. When copper prices slumped, the smaller mines quickly went bust, and even South Caradon survived until the 1880s only by virtue of its large output. Phoenix United continued to work its rich tin lodes for a little longer, but when it too eventually closed, the railway closed too. By the end of the 19th century all the mines around Caradon Hill were closed.
An attempt was made to rework the Phoenix lodes during theearly 20th century came to nothing.
