Oscar (a priest) and Lucinda (an heiress and glass factory owner) is the story of two gamblers who meet on a boat from England to New South Wales.
In Sydney, Oscar's gambling leads him to be thrown out of the priesthood and he moves in with Lucinda. The pair make a wager that Oscar cannot transport a glass church to Lucinda's friend and business partner, an outback priest (Ciaran Hinds).
Whilst Oscar successfully transports the church to the remote town, he has been traumatised by the journey. He goes to pray in the floating glass church and drowns when it sinks.
